How to score darts, from 301 to exactly zero
Each turn, you type the total of everyone's 3 darts: Teamzy takes it off their score, calls a bust when a turn goes past zero and ends the match when someone reaches exactly zero. Double out is a setting of the game.

Darts in 30 seconds
Everyone starts from 301 or 501. On your turn, you throw 3 darts, and their total comes off your score. The first to reach exactly zero wins. A turn that would take you below zero is a bust: your score stays what it was before the turn. In tournaments, you also have to finish on a double, with your last dart in the outer ring or the bull.
What each part of the board is worth
The board has 20 segments, numbered from 1 to 20. A dart scores the number of its segment, double in the outer ring, treble (or triple) in the middle ring. The bull scores 50 and the ring around it 25. So a turn scores 180 at most, three darts in the treble 20. That is exactly what Teamzy reminds you of when you enter a turn.
The points of a dart
| What counts | Points |
|---|---|
| Number hit | its value, 1 to 20 |
| Outer ring (double) | × 2 |
| Middle ring (treble) | × 3 |
| Ring around the bull | 25 |
| Bull | 50 |
| Going past zero | turn cancelled |
Checkouts to know
When you have to finish on a double, the score you have left tells you which darts to aim for. A few classic checkouts:
| Left | One way to finish |
|---|---|
| 170 | Treble 20, treble 20, bull: the highest checkout in 3 darts |
| 100 | Treble 20, double 20 |
| 60 | 20, double 20 |
| 50 | The bull, which counts as a double |
| 40 | Double 20 |
| 32 | Double 16: hit a single 16 and double 8 is left |
| 2 | Double 1, the smallest checkout |
You cannot check out in 3 darts from 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 or 159, nor from above 170. And with 1 left, no double can finish anymore: the turn is a bust.
The score sheet to print
A darts score sheet in US Letter for 4 players and 26 turns: for each player, the total of the turn and the score left. Write 301 or 501 on the starting line. Print it for your next match, or let Teamzy keep score.

Lucas, Emma and Hugo play 301 with double out. After four turns, Emma has 51 left, Hugo 96 and Lucas 100.
- 1Turn 5, Lucas scores 60: he has 40 left, a double 20.
- 2Emma hits 20, 20 and 10, so 50: she would have 1 left, which no double can finish. Bust, she stays on 51.
- 3Hugo scores 64: he has 32 left.
- 4Turn 6, Lucas hits 20, then 20 again: exactly zero, but his last dart is in a single. Bust, he stays on 40.
- 5Emma hits 19, then double 16: 19 + 32 = 51, exactly zero on a double. She wins, and Hugo does not need to throw.
Emma wins in 6 turns. Hugo has 32 left and Lucas 40.
In Teamzy, you type the total of each turn: the app takes the points off, calls a bust when a turn goes past zero or leaves 1, and asks whether the last dart was in a double when someone reaches exactly zero.

The questions that come up at the board
In 301 or 501, everyone starts from that score and takes off the total of each turn of 3 darts. A dart scores the number of its segment, double or treble in the rings, 25 in the ring around the bull and 50 in the bull. The first to reach exactly zero wins. A turn that goes past zero is a bust, and the score stays what it was before the turn.
The rules of the World Darts Federation, WDF (PDF)It is a bust, for the whole turn: your score goes back to what it was before the turn, even if your first darts were good. With double out, it is also a bust if the turn leaves 1, or reaches zero without finishing on a double. That is the rule of the WDF, the world federation, and the one Teamzy applies.
In tournaments, yes: the last dart must land in a double, the outer ring, or in the bull, which counts as double 25. In pubs and among friends, many play without it. In Teamzy, “Double out” is in the game's settings, off by default: once it is on, the app asks whether the last dart was in a double when someone reaches exactly zero.
Only the starting score. 501 is the tournament match, longer; 301 is quicker, often played in pubs or to get started. Some players start 301 on a double: the points only count from the first dart in a double. Teamzy does not handle that start: just type the points that count. In the game's settings, you can also start from 701.
170: treble 20, treble 20 and the bull. Above it, you cannot check out in 3 darts, and the same goes for 169, 168, 166, 165, 163, 162 and 159. The biggest possible turn is 180, three darts in the treble 20, but it can never end a match with double out.
Three. The player throws their 3 darts, the total is counted, then it is the next player's turn. A dart that falls out or misses the board scores 0. In Teamzy, you type that total, from 0 to 180, and an empty box counts as 0.
No. In cricket, you play the numbers 15 to 20 and the bull: you have to hit each one three times to close it, then you score points on those the others have not closed yet. Teamzy scores 301, 501 and 701. To keep track of a cricket match, you can create a “Cricket” game where you pick the winner.
Yes. Each team has a single score, and its players throw in turn, alternating with the other team. In Teamzy, Darts is played free-for-all or in teams: in teams, you type the turn of whoever just threw for their team.
