Keep score in Papayoo, without missing a point
At the end of each round, you type the points each player took: Teamzy adds up the totals and ranks from lowest to highest, up to the last round you planned. While you type, the “How do you count the points?” help reminds you what each card is worth.

Papayoo in 30 seconds
Papayoo is a French trick-taking card game published by Gigamic, for 3 to 8 players, where everyone tries to take as few points as possible. The deck has 60 cards: four suits, spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs, numbered 1 to 10, and a fifth suit, the 20 Payoo cards, numbered 1 to 20. All the cards are dealt (with 7 or 8 players, first remove the four 1s of spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs), everyone passes a few cards to the player on their left, then the dealer rolls the die: the 7 of the suit it shows becomes the Papayoo for the round. You play tricks with no trumps, following the suit led, and the highest card of that suit takes the trick. At the end of the round, each Payoo card you took counts its value and the Papayoo 40: 250 points in all. You choose the number of rounds before playing, and after the last one, the lowest total wins.
What each card is worth
Two kinds of cards count, and they count against you. Each Payoo card in your tricks is worth the number printed on it, from 1 to 20; the Papayoo, the 7 of the suit rolled on the die, is worth 40. The other cards are worth nothing, the other three 7s included. The 20 Payoo cards make 210 points (1 + 2 + … + 20) and the Papayoo 40: each round hands out 250 points, whatever the number of players. Before writing down the scores, add up the round: if you don't get 250, a card was missed or counted twice.
Points of the cards you take
| What counts | Points |
|---|---|
| Each Payoo card (1 to 20) | its value |
| The Papayoo (the 7 of the die’s suit) | 40 |
| The other cards | 0 |
One round worked out: 52 points for Léa with the Papayoo
The last round of the match told below, with four players: the die showed hearts, so the 7 of hearts is the Papayoo. After the last trick, everyone turns over their tricks and sets aside the cards that count: their Payoo cards, and the Papayoo for Léa, who took it. The other cards are worth 0 and are not listed. The bottom line is the check: the 20 Payoo cards, each one once, and the Papayoo make 250.
| Player | Payoo cards taken | Papayoo | Points |
|---|---|---|---|
| Léa |
| 7 of hearts : 40 | 52 |
| Hugo |
| 0 | 6 |
| Chloé |
| 0 | 83 |
| Nathan |
| 0 | 109 |
| Round total | 210 | 40 | 250 |

Léa, Hugo, Chloé and Nathan play a four-player match, everyone for themselves, and agree beforehand to play five rounds. With four players, everyone gets 15 cards and passes 5 to the player on their left, then the die picks the Papayoo.
- 1Round 1: the Papayoo ends up in one of Hugo's tricks, and he takes 71 points, 40 for the Papayoo and 31 in Payoo cards. Léa takes only 27, Chloé 58 and Nathan 94.
- 2Round 2: it's Léa's turn to take the Papayoo, 84 points in all, while Hugo takes only 12; Chloé takes 107 and Nathan 47. After two rounds, Hugo has the lowest total, 83, ahead of Léa (111), Nathan (141) and Chloé (165).
- 3Round 3: Léa takes no card that counts, 0 points, while Hugo takes the Papayoo again and scores 119 points, Papayoo included. Chloé takes 36 and Nathan 95. Léa is back in front with 111, ahead of Chloé (201), Hugo (202) and Nathan (236).
- 4Round 4: Chloé takes the Papayoo (61 points), but Léa takes 103 points in Payoo cards alone. Hugo takes 34 and Nathan 52. Before the last round: Léa 214, Hugo 236, Chloé 262 and Nathan 288.
- 5Round 5: the die shows hearts. During the round, Chloé leads a trick with the 3 of spades; Nathan plays the 6 of spades, Léa the 10 of spades, and Hugo, who has no spades left, discards the 7 of hearts, the Papayoo. Léa played the highest spade: she takes the trick, and with it the Papayoo's 40 points.
- 6Everyone counts their cards, as in the table above: 52 for Léa (40 + 3 + 9), 6 for Hugo, 83 for Chloé and 109 for Nathan. The check is right: 52 + 6 + 83 + 109 = 250. Hugo goes from 236 to 242, Léa from 214 to 266: the five rounds are played, and the lowest total wins.
Hugo wins with 242 points, ahead of Léa (266), Chloé (345) and Nathan (397), who never took the Papayoo.
In Teamzy, at the end of each round, you type everyone's points: in the last one, 52 for Léa, 6 for Hugo, 83 for Chloé and 109 for Nathan. While you type, the “How do you count the points?” help reminds you what each card is worth. The app adds up the totals and ranks from lowest to highest; a Papayoo match has no score to reach, so after round 5, tap “End the match”.

The questions that come up at the table
At the end of the round, everyone turns over their tricks and adds up their Payoo cards, each at its value, from 1 to 20, plus 40 if they took the Papayoo. The other cards are worth nothing. Everyone's points always add up to 250: check it before writing down the scores. Everyone adds their points to their total, and after the last round, the lowest total wins. In the example, Léa scores 52 in the last round: 40 for the Papayoo, 3 and 9 for her Payoo cards.
Because all the cards are dealt and played, and each one ends up in a trick. The 20 Payoo cards are worth 1 + 2 + … + 20, so 210 points, and the Papayoo 40: 250 in all. With 7 or 8 players, the four 1s you remove are those of spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs, which are worth nothing: the Payoo 1 stays in play, and the total doesn't change. If the round doesn't add up to 250, count again before typing the points: a card was missed, or counted twice.
With 3 players, 20 cards each, 5 of them to pass; with 4, 15 cards and 5 to pass; with 5, 12 cards and 4 to pass; with 6, 10 cards and 3 to pass. With 7 or 8, you play without the four 1s of spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs: 8 cards each with seven players, 7 with eight, and 3 to pass. Everyone places the cards they pass in front of the player on their left before looking at the ones coming from the player on their right. The dealer changes every round.
After passing cards, never before: when everyone picks the cards to pass, nobody knows yet which 7 will be the Papayoo. Then the dealer rolls the die, and the 7 of the suit it shows is worth 40 points until the end of the round. Keeping a 7 is a gamble; so is getting rid of a whole suit, because the player on your right can pass you more cards of it.
No: only the 7 of the suit rolled on the die is worth 40 points. The other three 7s are worth 0, like the other cards of spades, hearts, diamonds and clubs. The Payoo 7 stays a Payoo card, worth 7 points. And the Papayoo changes every round: the 7 of hearts can be worth 40 in one round and nothing in the next.
No: they are a fifth suit, played just like the other four. When someone leads a Payoo card, everyone must follow with a Payoo card if they have one; otherwise, they play any card they like. The trick goes to the highest card of the suit led, and you never have to play higher than the others: a low card of the suit leaves the trick to an opponent.
Your table decides, before starting. Gigamic's current rules suggest 5 rounds for a match of average length. So that everyone deals the same number of times, you can also play as many rounds as there are players. In Teamzy, a Papayoo match has no set end: the app numbers the rounds, and you tap “End the match” after the last one.
