Keep score at table tennis, set by set
At the end of each set you type the score: Teamzy checks the set is really over, counts the sets won and ends the match as soon as a player or a pair has won most of the sets. Before you play, the app also forms balanced pairs from everyone's level.

Table tennis in 30 seconds
Table tennis, or ping-pong, is played in singles (one against one) or doubles (two against two), across a table. Each rally won is worth a point, whoever served. A set is won at 11 points, as long as you lead by 2: at 10-10 play goes on until one side is 2 points clear. A match is the best of an odd number of sets, most often 3 or 5, and the first to win most of the sets takes it.
What each rally is worth
Each rally won is worth one point, whether you served or not. The first to 11 points wins the set, but only with a lead of at least 2: 11-9 ends the set, 11-10 does not, and it goes on to 12-10, 13-11 and so on. Then you count the sets won: in Teamzy a match is played best of 5 sets, so 3 sets win it.
The points of a set
| What counts | Points |
|---|---|
| Each rally won | 1 |
| A set | 11 points, 2 clear |
The sheet of the example
The five sets of the match told below: the score of each set, then the sets won by Lucas and Emma. The winner of each set is shaded. Lucas and Emma are level at 2 sets all before the last one, which Lucas wins.
| Set | Lucas | Emma | Sets won |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 11 | 9 | 1 - 0 |
| 2 | 7 | 11 | 1 - 1 |
| 3 | 12 (Set 3: 10-10, then 12-10 to Lucas, who gets the 2-point lead) | 10 | 2 - 1 |
| 4 | 9 | 11 | 2 - 2 |
| 5 | 11 | 8 | 3 - 2 |
A match, best of 5 sets
Lucas and Emma play singles, best of 5 sets: the first to win 3 sets takes the match.
- 1Set 1: Lucas wins 11-9, with a 2-point lead. Set 2: Emma hits back 11-7. One set all.
- 2Set 3: both players reach 10-10. Lucas has not won at 11-10: he needs a 2-point lead, so the set goes on. Lucas takes two rallies in a row and wins 12-10.
- 3Set 4: Emma wins 11-9 and levels at 2 sets all. Everything rests on the fifth set.
- 4Set 5: Lucas gets ahead and wins 11-8. He has won 3 sets to 2.
Lucas wins the match 3 sets to 2.
In Teamzy, you type each player's score at the end of the set, 11 and 9 for the first. If the score does not end the set (11-10, say), the app tells you and does not save it. It counts the sets won and ends the match as soon as Lucas wins his third set. A set saved by mistake is fixed with a tap.

The questions that come up at the table
One point per rally won, whoever served. A set goes to 11 points with a 2-point lead, and the match to whoever wins most of the sets. The table and the example above show a whole match.
The Laws of Table Tennis (ITTF, chapter 2 of the Statutes)At 10-10, a one-point lead is not enough: the set goes on until one player is 2 points clear, 12-10, 13-11, 14-12, with no cap on the points.
The service changes every 2 points: the player who was receiving becomes the server. At 10-10, or once the expedite system is in play, it changes after every point. Whoever serves first in a set receives first in the next one. Teamzy does not follow the service: you only type the score of each set.
The Laws ask for an odd number of sets and do not fix one: 3, 5 or 7 depending on the competition or the table. In Teamzy a match is best of 5 sets by default, and you can set it to best of 3 or best of 7 in the settings of the game. The points of a set can be changed too, for a set to 21 for instance.
After every set: a player who started at one end starts at the other end in the next set. In the last possible set of the match, you also change ends as soon as one player or pair reaches 5 points. Teamzy does not note the ends: you type the score of the set, nothing more.
It is a rule that avoids endless sets. If a set lasts 10 minutes, or sooner if both players ask for it, each player serves for just one point in turn, and the receiver scores the point by making 13 correct returns in a rally. It is not brought in if at least 18 points have already been scored in the set. Once in play, it stays until the end of the match. In Teamzy you type the score of the set as usual.
The scoring is the same: 11 points, a 2-point lead, sets won. Only the order of service changes: the two partners serve in turn, and at each change of service the previous receiver becomes the server. In Teamzy, table tennis is played by 2 to 4 players: with four, the app forms the two pairs, and you type the score of each set for both pairs.
In Teamzy, pick table tennis, tick the four players and tap “Balanced by level”: the app splits them into two pairs with levels as close as possible. Everyone has a level from 1 to 5 stars for each game, kept from one match to the next. Not convinced? Reshuffle with one tap. The balanced draw is part of Premium; without Premium, pairs are drawn at random.
