Azul in 30 seconds

Azul is a board game by Michael Kiesling, published by Next Move Games, where 2 to 4 players decorate the wall of a palace with colored tiles. On your turn, you take all the tiles of one color from a Factory display or from the center of the table, and place them on one of your pattern lines; those that don't fit fall onto your floor line. At the end of each round, each complete pattern line sends one tile to your wall, which scores points right away on the score track. The match stops at the end of the round in which a player completes a horizontal row of 5 tiles, then the end bonuses are added.

What scores points

During the match, each tile placed on your wall scores right away: 1 point if it has no neighbor; otherwise, along its row and then its column, in each direction where it has a neighbor, 1 point per tile linked to it, itself included. Each tile on your floor line costs you the points printed above it, from −1 to −3, never going below 0. At the end, each complete horizontal row scores 2 points, each complete column 7 points, and each color with all 5 of its tiles on your wall 10 points. On a tie, the most complete horizontal rows wins.

One tile placed, worked out

In the last round, Lucas places the 5th tile of a color on his wall. It has 2 tiles to its left and 1 above. Horizontally, 3 tiles in a row, itself included: 3 points. Vertically, 2 tiles: 2 points. It counts in both directions.

An end of match, turned around by the bonuses

Lucas, Hugo, Léa and Chloé play a four-player match, on the colored side of the boards. Hugo moves forward row after row and scores big on the track. Lucas builds his columns and gathers the tiles of one color, bonuses that only count at the end.

  1. 1Last round: Lucas places the tile that completes his color. Linked to 2 tiles on its left and 1 above, it brings him 3 + 2 = 5 points on the track.
  2. 2Hugo completes two horizontal rows at once, which stops the match at the end of this round; Lucas and Léa also complete their row. But Hugo took the starting player marker and 2 extra tiles: his floor line costs him 1 + 1 + 2 = 4 points.
  3. 3Everyone reads the score track: Hugo 72, Léa 61, Lucas 58, Chloé 49. Hugo seems to have won.
  4. 4The end bonuses are added. Lucas has 1 complete row (2 points), 2 columns (14 points) and 1 color (10 points): 84. Hugo has 2 rows: 76. Léa has 1 row and 1 column: 70. Chloé has 1 column and 1 color: 66.

Lucas wins with 84 points, ahead of Hugo (76), Léa (70) and Chloé (66). Third on the track, he moves ahead thanks to the 26 points of his bonuses.

In Teamzy, you fill in the sheet once the last round is over. On the Score track line, type the score read on the track, floor line already taken off: 58 for Lucas. On Complete rows, Complete columns and Complete colors, type the points of the bonus: 2 per row, 7 per column, 10 per color, so 2, 14 and 10 for Lucas. On the Number of rows line, below the total, type the number of complete horizontal rows, 1 for Lucas: it is not added to the points and only breaks a tie. Teamzy adds it up, names Lucas and keeps the match in the history.

The questions that come up at the table

Points are counted during the match, on the score track: each tile placed on your wall scores right away, and your floor line takes some off at the end of each round. When the match stops, everyone adds their end bonuses: 2 points per complete horizontal row, 7 per complete column and 10 per color with all 5 tiles placed. The highest total wins. In Teamzy, type the score of the track and then the three bonuses, and the total works itself out.
